Instagram: The Trace on Instagram: "On November 10, 2019, Melinda Abdallah’s son, Jacob, was preparing for the birth of his first child when he became the unintended target of a shooting in Little Village, the Chicago neighborhood where he lived. Before it was pointed at him, the gun that ended his life was used three times prior, and after, it killed a 16-year-old. That didn’t change the fact that no witnesses came forward to give any information about Jacob’s death. “What I’ve come to learn,” Abdallah writes, “is that because there is so much violence in Little Village, people won’t speak up, even if they’ve witnessed it firsthand.” Since her son’s death, Abdallah has worked to honor Jacob’s spirit, by bringing survivors and nonsurvivors together, and fighting for safer streets.
